Patient Testimonials – Orthotics

26 May 2016
I started to get some serious pain from my knees when I ran so I visited the physiotherapist who took one look at me and felt it was bio mechanical and referred me to see Foot Pain Centres of Leeds.
He agreed and explained, very clearly, where the problem was coming from and what we could do to stop it. He demonstrated that the knee pain was coming from my foot position but showing me some pressure points and how painful they were, then he moved my feet to the correct position and there was no pain when those points were palpated.
So some orthotics were made. I am now running pain free and and don’t worry about my knees when I run at all.
It’s fantastic what a simple change can make to me.

My daughter loves ballet, but was becoming increasingly frustrated with pain in her feet after class often making her stop or sit out of part of the lesson.
As Foot Pain Centres of Leeds pointed out every twist and turn her body was making to try and relieve the pressure coming from her feet, he explained what was wrong and how this was affecting her whole body. After that it all seemed so simple, orthotic insoles were cast (a process most enjoyed by daughter). A number of visits to the centre and exercises to complete at home (that has been the hardest part).
That brings us to today, her spine is aligned, hips are square, and most importantly a confident happy daughter who is enjoying ballet again, and becoming more confident with other sports as she no longer tries to avoid doing anything on her feet.

After weeks of ignoring the fact that something was wrong with my left foot I finally succumbed to visiting the doctor who directed me to Foot Pain Centres of Leeds.
I had a burning sensation between my third and forth toe in the ball of my foot plus a numbness of the toes.
Jonathan at Foot Pain Centres of Leeds knew straight away by my description exactly what the problem was. I had a Neuroma caused by inflammation of nerves around my 3rd and 4th toes. He realigned my foot and ankle, which was painless, and then took plaster casts of both feet. I had Orthotics made and the centre took time to explain how to use them correctly. Within a few weeks my foot has no pain, no numbness and I can walk, run and exercise with ease. Providing treatments that work!

I consulted Foot Pain Centres of Leeds about foot pain caused by running ultra distance marathons, they quickly diagnosed my problem which was related to foot alignment and over tightened calf muscles and tightness on the outside of my lower legs. He also identified a limited range of movement in my heal joint caused by the incorrect foot alignment as it struck the ground in my usual running gait. They recommended orthotic inserts, stretching and physio at the Ilkley Valley clinic.  Four months on from wearing the inserts I am completely healed and running faster times than I have ever run before now I have the correct foot alignment and full range of movement in my ankle joint which was fixed by the orthotic inserts and a short course of physio.
I would definitely recommend and use again, worked magic on me in a short time frame and correctly identified my lifelong issues with my feet in just a few minutes of watching me run – amazing!

I consulted with Foot Pain Centres of Leeds about a painful heel and they quickly and correctly diagnosed Achilles Enthesopathy. I addition they spotted some previously unidentified foot problems that been with me since birth. They were able to perform some manipulation which allowed the foot to move as freely as it should and recommended the use of orthotic insoles specifically designed to ensure that my feet were correctly aligned. Plaster casts of my feet were made by the centre and within two weeks the insoles were supplied and ready for wearing in. In the meantime I had a couple of sessions with a physiotherapist who recommended a series of exercises which I did at home to strengthen the appropriate muscles. Once the insoles could be worn full time and the muscles had been built up, I was in a position to resume my hobby of taking long walks in the Dales and over the Pennine Moors. All this happened about three years ago and there has been no recurrence of the problem in that time. The treatment was totally successful. If I have any other trouble with my feet, the clinic and orthotics service will be the first people I will turn to.

Orthotics

Just as peoples’ eyes differ, your feet vary in size, shape and function. Your podiatrist will examine any underlying Biomechanical changes that may have contributed to your symptoms. This may be performed using gait analysis, and if required, prescriptive inserts or Orthotics will be produced.

Biomechanical measurements are firstly taken whilst standing and lying down, then a plaster cast impression (the negative) is produced of your feet whilst lying on your front. Our laboratory will then manufacture your bespoke devices from a second plaster cast (the positive) taken from your original mould.

Types of Orthotics

Functional Orthotics are designed to prescriptively correct anatomical abnormalities in the lower limb, we tend to fabricate our devices from a material called EVA (Ethyl vinyl acetate a rubber based material) which is available in different densities, which both corrects and aids in shock absorption.

Accomodative Orthotics are designed to cushion and relieve stress and overload, made from a combination of shock absorbing materials and are very useful for patients with Diabetes and Rheumatoid arthritis.

Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO’s) are produced from a cast of the leg and foot and are designed to stabilise both the foot, ankle and leg for those patients presenting with such conditions as Foot drop, Cerebral Palsy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

How to wear in your functional Orthotics

Orthotics will realign your feet and ankles helping to correct and control body posture in order to reduce your symptoms.

They should be worn in very gradually by 30 minutes extra each day in order to allow your body to be accustomed to it’s new position.

Athletes should wait until they have fully worn in their Orthotics prior to performing sport, we advise that runners should build up time and distance by 10-15 minute increments.

Orthotics are designed to help and give relief to the following common complaints:

  • Heel pain e.g. plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles pain
  • Flat feet
  • Knee pain
  • Low back pain

The Orthotic devices that we produce are NOT arch supports, they functionally alter the angulation of how the foot initially strikes the ground and prescriptively reduces the excessive forces that contribute towards your condition by allowing a more corrective, and normalised biomechanical position(s) to take place during standing, walking and running.

THE BRITISH ASSESSMENT BUREAU

Our reputation for making organisations stand out was established in 1969, starting as a specialist in certification scheme management. In 1997, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry approved the use of the word ‘British’ in our new corporate title in recognition of our pre-eminent status.

Today, we certify organisations to recognised standards like ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) and provide associated training. Outside of ISO standards, we design and manage bespoke assessment schemes. Such schemes are based on the establishment of standards, which can be developed to be recognised company-wide, industry-wide, nationally or internationally.
